The 3's of Adoption

Information provided by RescueDogs 101

Once the adoption process is complete and you are ready to bring your new furry family member home there are 3 periods that your new dog will follow as they adjust to their new environment. Patience and love is the best tool to get them through to the full normal life you expect.

IN THE FIRST 3 DAYS

Your new dog will be overwhelmed with her surroundings. She will not be comfortable enough to be herself. Don't be alarmed if she doesn't want to eat for the first couple of days, many dogs don't eat when they are stressed. She may shut down and want to curl up in her crate or under the table. She may be scared and unsure what is going on. Or she may be the opposite and test you to see what she can get away with, kind of like a teenager.

AFTER THE FIRST 3 WEEKS

She's starting to settle in, feeling more comfortable, and realizing this really may be her forever home. She has figured out her environment and getting into the routine that you have set. She lets her guard down and may start showing her real personality. Behavior issues may start showing, this is your time to be a strong pack leader and show her what is right and wrong.

AFTER THE FIRST 3 MONTHS

Your dog is now completely comfortable in her home. You have built trust and a true bond with your dog, which gives her a complete sense of security with you. She is set in her routine and will come to expect her dinner at her usual time.
